Puras Tortas $.50 Tacos! :)

Puras Tortas is in the food court!  Get some tacos and play some classic games in the arcade! 🙂

Doing anything Wednesday? Because there’s a place that has $.50 tacos every Wednesday/Miercoles!!  The tacos are a bit smaller than Don Pedro’s but for a 50 cent snack they are amazing.  It’s a shame corporate fast food has brainwashed us with the “dollar/value” menu when I would rather support small restaurants with much better choices.

Here are the tacos to scale.  If you have spare change in your car, you too can eat like a king here todos los miercoles!  I can’t decide if I like the green or red hot sauce better, but both are a must.  The Buford Hwy corridor in the ATL just has an abundance of affordable food.  If you planned your routes smartly a person could save money and eat some really flavorful food every day, from $1.50 steamed pork buns to $.50 tacos.

Don Pedro – Gwinnett County, GA

There are 3 locations that I know of in Gwinnett.  I still can’t understand how this part of town is Lawrenceville! 🙂
The one we like going to (Don Pedro III) stays open forever.  On one day, the hours are like 6am to midnight, which is madness!!

Some folks only go to Don Pedro for the tacos, which are an insanely affordable $1.59 each last time I looked.  I’m old enough to remember when Taco Bell was actually pretty decent and cheap.  Way back then a kid could survive off of their soft tacos.  These days, Taco Bell and the rest of corporate fast food isn’t really serving you anything decent.

Don Pedro though has tacos that most “sheltered” young’uns might be too afraid to eat.  That’s fine, more for us.  The types on the menu are: Asada (Steak), Pollo (Chicken), Al Pastor (Spicy Pork), Lengua (Tongue), Cabeza (Spicy Beef), and Barbacoa (BBQ Beef)
My favorite however is numero uno on the picture menu.  I like to get the Carne Asada dinner platter but with no ensalada but mas arroz y frijoles por favor. 🙂  (Hopefully my horrible limited espanol isn’t embarrassing every time I order!)  The grilled big green onion is amazing and sometimes the grilled jalapeno borders on psychedelic spicy.
The nachos are pretty good and a meal in itself too!  It comes in Chicken or Beef, and they’re never stingy with the sour cream, cheese, or guacamole unlike some places…

This past spring the original Don Pedro was looking quite nice with all the blossoms! 🙂

About Me

Hello there! My name is Boon, an artist/photographer out of the Atlanta, Georgia area. I guess you could say I'm also a "tour guide" of sorts for visitors, or even friends who haven't strayed from their culinary comfort zone. I haven't been everywhere, but I've been lucky enough to share plenty of delicious meals with friends and family over the years!

So for those of you thinking about visiting or even moving to the "sleepy south," hopefully you'll quickly find that the metro Atlanta area is so diverse with some of the best food!

Thanks for visiting my food blog--an offshoot of all my random adventures with friends and family.

About Atlanta, GA, U.S.A.

Atlanta, specifically Gwinnett and DeKalb County has some of the best Asian food in the southeast U.S. In fact, some folks from surrounding states drive 4-5 hours here just to eat and grocery shop!

We are definitely spoiled as you can find everything from Korean, Ethiopian, Indian, Indonesian, Mexican, Chinese, Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese food--combined with dozens of Asian coffee and dessert hang outs.

If you're new to this area, brave our horrible traffic, and just take a drive up and down Buford Hwy, Jimmy Carter Blvd and Pleasant Hill Road. So much to eat in every direction! :)

Meet me for Dinner! :)
