Puras Tortas $.50 Tacos! :)

Puras Tortas is in the food court!  Get some tacos and play some classic games in the arcade! 🙂

Doing anything Wednesday? Because there’s a place that has $.50 tacos every Wednesday/Miercoles!!  The tacos are a bit smaller than Don Pedro’s but for a 50 cent snack they are amazing.  It’s a shame corporate fast food has brainwashed us with the “dollar/value” menu when I would rather support small restaurants with much better choices.

Here are the tacos to scale.  If you have spare change in your car, you too can eat like a king here todos los miercoles!  I can’t decide if I like the green or red hot sauce better, but both are a must.  The Buford Hwy corridor in the ATL just has an abundance of affordable food.  If you planned your routes smartly a person could save money and eat some really flavorful food every day, from $1.50 steamed pork buns to $.50 tacos.

Pita Palace – Atlanta, GA

Open everyday except Saturday!

On the corner of Briarcliff and LaVista is Pita Palace, a great place for Israeli/Middle Eastern food.  I really like the softness of the pita bread, and the spice level of the spread.  You can definitely taste the minced jalapenos.  So if you just re-watched the first Avengers and really wanted some good shwarma (spiced chicken rotisserie that’s been spinning in the heating oven), this is my choice.

The place only has a few tables inside and an outside dining area, but it’s good for a quick casual lunch.  Pitas start around $6.50, and you can go back for toppings like olives and light salad mix.  The bigger combo prices with drinks could quickly get out of hand though.  A somewhat big lunch for 4 could be $60+, which would be getting in a good Thai/Korean dinner territory.

Batavia – Doraville, GA

Open Everyday from 10am – 11:30pm

I really like Indonesian food, the flavor is very similar to our own home cooking.  Batavia is great because it’s a spin on the southern “1 meat and two veggies” plate.  I always run into a familiar face getting lunch because it’s a quick and large helping for around $6-8!  If you like white rice and saucy dishes (and I do!), this a place to always keep in mind when you’re in Doraville/Chamblee.

We’ve been going there long enough for them to have remodeled and flipped the grocery portion to the opposite side.  I’ll have to pull up a better photo of the food selections later, but from memory here are some of the items I eat a lot:

Beef Rendang, Curry Chicken, Curry Tripe, Chicken Livers, Fried Chicken, Scrambled Eggs, Fried Fish

Spicy Tofu and Vegetables, Sweet and Spicy Eggplant, Sauteed Greens, Plantains

The Beef Rendang is a must try, as it’s coconutty/spicy with a gravy that you know must have been simmering for a long time.  Sometimes it can be very spicy though, but of late it’s been a medium hot.  You can also get a small condiment side of a hot sauce that reminds me of the crab paste we use in some dishes.  It is definitely pungent with a kick!

Those are just a few of the items on the quick lunch/dinner selection.  You can order off the menu as well, to get dishes like Ox Tail soup, Stir fried water spinach, and satay for a dollar!  The sweet drinks like Thai Tea and smoothies are affordable, or you can grab a drink from the grocery section.  I once had a battered and fried fermented Cassava dessert that was next level!

Rice, Fried Chicken (Asian style), Plantains, and Curry Tripe

I’ve had the curry duck here twice!  I like it, as I’m a fan of the massaman type of sweet curry.  It might not be for everyone, but I think the pineapple and grapes really add to it.  The crispiness of the duck skin was nice too.

This place was crazy busy when it first opened.  Things have gone back to normal, and you never see lines wrapped around the building anymore.  I do like this type of food.  It’s a bit dry and plain to me though, as I really think Pita Palace is top tier in terms of flavor.  That Halal Guys hot sauce though is no joke in the spicy department! Right before sunset the view across Buford Hwy in front of Halal Guys was very picturesque.

About Atlanta, GA, U.S.A.

Atlanta, specifically Gwinnett and DeKalb County has some of the best Asian food in the southeast U.S. In fact, some folks from surrounding states drive 4-5 hours here just to eat and grocery shop!

We are definitely spoiled as you can find everything from Korean, Ethiopian, Indian, Indonesian, Mexican, Chinese, Lao, Thai, and Vietnamese food--combined with dozens of Asian coffee and dessert hang outs.

If you're new to this area, brave our horrible traffic, and just take a drive up and down Buford Hwy, Jimmy Carter Blvd and Pleasant Hill Road. So much to eat in every direction! :)

Meet me for Dinner! :)
